JoyceDeWitt first performed on stage at the age of 13 years old. DeWitt earned her degree from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. When she performed in her summer stock she was persuaded by the director to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was given the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA she was employed as a secretary up to her TV debut in the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to rumors that she was taught by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has claimed that the two have never had a conversation. DeWitt is well-known for her role as Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 run of the sitcom Three's Company, a job she was offered after being selected for the show's second pilot. Janet was also in an episode of the show The Ropers in which she starred in in 1979. After Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in 1984, then she stopped acting for a number of years. Acting was her first return to the stage in June of 1991 when she was a performer on the Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. The actress later appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured the character who was modeled after her voice. She was voiced by an actress in 1997. She appeared in an episode of Cybill as well as a cameo on the penultimate episode of Living Single. A few of her 2000s TV works included Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as and Call of the Wild.
